I Can Do That.... I think.

To catch those up who do not know... I have recently been cast in the role of "Mike" in a regional production of A Chorus Line being produced by TOU Productions. Playing "Mike" is a very big deal to me- it's one of those roles I've always wanted to play, but was pretty sure I'd never get to. But lo and behold here I am having just completed my first day of rehearsal. Right now, however, all my thoughts of, "Woo-hoo, I'm finally in A Chorus Line!", have morphed into, "Jesus Christ, I'm in pain."
Today we started work on the opening number- which is, for all intents and purposes, a nine minute dance sequence- and by the time I got home I was ready to drown myself in muscle relaxers. It has been such a long time since I've been in a heavy dance show that I forgot (truly forgot!) what torture it is physically- and let's face it... at almost twenty-six years old- I'm not getting any younger. It's been so long since I've actually considered myself a true "dancer", that it was a shock to remember how much I actually enjoy doing it... which is good seeing as how I'm going to have to dance my ass off- twenty-four hours a day- for the next few weeks to get myself back into dancing shape.
As "Mike" it is my great responsibility to "get the ball rolling" (as my director puts it) with my song, "I Can Do That". We start work on that on Thursday I believe (I don't know where my schedule is at the moment) and I'm looking at that with a great amount of excitement and trepidation- I just hope I'm up to the task. Though today the choreographer singled me out to demonstrate one of the combinations for the rest of the cast so I must be doing alright so far (though isn't it funny... I love performing and I love being a working actor- yet being singeld out made me uncomfortable. Perhaps A Chorus Line is a good show for me after all, maybe I'm better as an ensemble player. Though what type of an actor would ever have said that?)
Ah well... as someone once wrote; "I wake up, I walk, I fall down, but meanwhile- I keep dancing."
